Airline delays are a common frustration for travellers, particularly when a two-hour flight delay disrupts your well-earned holiday or risks a missed connection. While EU Regulation 261/2004 and its UK equivalent, UK 261, ensure compensation for delays exceeding three hours, passengers facing shorter delays of two hours are still entitled to specific rights and assistance. Airlines must provide snacks, meals, and refreshments proportionate to the wait time, as well as access to two free phone calls, faxes, or internet connectivity to contact loved ones.

Below, we explore these rights in detail and clarify what additional claims may be possible.

Key points about 2-hour flight delays

  • For short-haul flights (under 1,500 km), airlines must provide meals, refreshments, and communications after a 2-hour delay.

  • Your rights at the 2-hour mark only apply to short flights; medium and long-haul flights have different thresholds.

  • A 2-hour delay alone doesn't qualify for financial compensation, but if it extends to 3+ hours, you may be entitled to £220–£520.

  • Flights departing from UK/EU airports or arriving in the UK/EU on a UK/EU airline are covered by EC261/UK261.

  • Use AirHelp’s free tool to check eligibility and submit your claim easily, with a “no win, no fee” guarantee.

What happens when your flight is delayed by 2 hours?

A 2-hour plane delay can be frustrating, but UK 261 (the UK’s version of EU Regulation 261/2004) ensures passengers are protected.

A 2-hour delay sits at an important threshold for passenger rights. While this duration might not qualify for financial compensation in most cases, you are still entitled to specific care and assistance from your airline.

EU 261 and UK 261 regulations outline your rights to care and assistance when your flight is delayed, and in some cases, to 2 hour flight delay compensation if the delay exceeds 3 hours. Whether you’re travelling to or from the UK, or within Europe, AirHelp is here to guide you through the process.

Your rights during a 2-hour flight delay

Obligation to inform passengers of their rights

Your first basic right is to be informed about the content of EC 261. Every airline has to display information on passengers’ rights at their check-in counters in every airport where they operate. If our breakdown of the legalese is still not enough, you can read the actual text of EC 261, as well.

What assistance are you entitled to during a 2-hour delay?

If your flight is delayed by two hours, the operating airline must provide assistance while you wait. This includes ensuring that each passenger has adequate food and drink proportionate to the waiting time, access to toilets (either in the airport or on the aircraft), and the ability to notify relatives, friends, or colleagues about the delay.

When assisting passengers, the airline experiencing the delay must prioritise those with disabilities, families with children, and elderly travellers.

Additionally, if the two-hour delay is part of a multi-leg journey booked with the same airline and causes you to miss your connecting flight, you may be entitled to a refund or rebooking on an alternative flight.

Your assistance and compensation rights depend on the flight distance, as outlined in the table below:

Flight distanceCare rights at 2 hoursCompensation
Short flights (<1,500 km)✔️ Meals, refreshments, communications❌ Not yet eligible
Medium flights (1,500-3,500 km)❌ Not yet eligible❌ Not yet eligible
Long flights (>3,500 km)❌ Not yet eligible❌ Not yet eligible

Care and assistance rights

If your flight is delayed for at least two hours you may be entitled to assistance. Under UK 261 regulations (formerly EC 261 before Brexit), airlines must provide you with:

These rights activate at different delay thresholds depending on your flight distance:

  • Short flights (under 1,500 km): after 2 hours

  • Medium flights (1,500–3,500 km): after 3 hours

  • Long flights (over 3,500 km): after 4 hours

For a 2-hour delay, you'll only receive these care provisions if you're on a short-haul flight within the UK or to/from Europe.

Please note: if the airline does not provide assistance during the delay, you may claim reimbursement for expenses by keeping all receipts for food, drinks, and other essentials.

2-hour flight delay compensation

A 2-hour delay alone typically doesn't qualify for financial compensation. Under EU and UK law, compensation is generally available when:

  • Your flight is delayed by 3+ hours at your final destination

  • The delay wasn't caused by 'extraordinary circumstances'

  • You departed from a UK airport or arrived at a UK airport on a UK or EU airline

However, if your 2-hour delay later extends beyond 3 hours, or if your flight is cancelled due to the delay, you may be eligible for:

Flight distanceCompensation
Short flights (<1,500 km)Up to £220 (€250)
Medium flights (1,500–3,500 km)Up to £350 (€400)
Long flights (>3,500 km)Up to £520 (€600)

What to do during a 2-hour flight delay

EC 261 and UK 261 protect your rights as a passenger. In the event of a two-hour flight delay, there are a few things you can do to have all your rights recognised, and claim compensation from the airline if the delay extends beyond two hours. Here are some tips on how best to deal with a two-hour delayed flight:

  1. Hold onto your boarding pass and any other travel documents
.

  2. Gather proof of the delay (for example photos of the departure board or communications from the airline confirming the disruption.)

  3. Ask the airline staff the official reason for the delay.

  4. Ask the airline to pay for your meals and refreshments, and, if needed, to provide you with a hotel room.

  5. Keep your receipts if your delayed flight ends up costing you extra money.

  6. Check if the delay is getting longer: a 2-hour delay could turn into a delay of more than 3 hours, potentially entitling you to compensation.

Airline responsibility and extraordinary circumstances

Should a two-hour delay be prolonged, you may be entitled to compensation under EC 261 and UK 261. The right to compensation for a delayed flight depends on the airline’s responsibility: no compensation is due for circumstances beyond their control. These extraordinary circumstances include severe weather conditions, medical emergencies, airport staff strikes, political instability, bird strikes, acts of sabotage, security risks… you get the idea.

If you’re still unsure, the table below helps clarify when you might be eligible for compensation:

Compensation

  • Disruptions due to operational issues (e.g., technical problems)

  • Denied boarding due to overbooking

  • Missed connections caused by delays on the first leg of your journey

  • Strikes by airline staff

Extraordinary Circumstances

  • Severe weather conditions (e.g., snowstorms)

  • Natural disasters (e.g., volcanic eruptions, earthquakes)

  • Security threats or emergencies impacting airport operations

  • Strikes by airport staff

Under extraordinary circumstances, compensation is therefore off the table. However, other rights still apply, such as the right to care and assistance during your wait and, if applicable, the right to a ticket refund.

Your rights beyond the 2-hour mark

The two-hour delay marks an important threshold for passenger rights protected by EC 261 and UK 261. A two-hour delay triggers the right to care on short-haul flights (under 1500 km), but if it reaches three hours or more you have further entitlements – from right to care for medium-haul flights, to the possibility of compensation.

How AirHelp can help

We understand that many air passengers do not have the time, experience or inclination to fight with airlines in order to make a delayed flight claim for the compensation they’re owed.

AirHelp is able to submit claims on passengers’ behalf:

  1. We'll tell you quickly if we think you're eligible for compensation.

  2. We'll handle all communication with the airline.

  3. There's no risk, we only charge a fee when we're successful in getting your compensation.

UK vs EU regulations: what's different after Brexit?

After Brexit, the regulation known as UK 261 guarantees passengers rights equivalent to those under EC 261. However, there are some minor differences, as shown in the table below:

For flights delayed by 2 hours, the rights are currently identical under both regulatory frameworks.
