The FBI's Denver Field Office has now opened a federal investigation into what happened, and Denver International Airport said it will cooperate fully. Investigators are expected to examine:

  • Whether checkpoint screening failed.

  • Whether special permissions for law-enforcement officers carrying weapons were handled correctly.

  • Whether any criminal charges are warranted.

That matters beyond this one flight. Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, and the findings could prompt changes in how airports handle law-enforcement exemptions in the future.
