What Air India passengers say: reviews and customer opinion

Passenger reviews tell you a lot about what flying Air India is really like.

To measure that fairly and consistently, AirHelp uses a structured Customer Opinion score, drawn from feedback given directly by travellers around the world.

Customer Opinion score

  • 7.6/10

How the customer opinion score is worked out

AirHelp gathers passenger opinion through hundreds of surveys run across more than 60 countries, drawing on over 11,500 airline ratings from travellers rating the airline they flew most recently.

Passengers rate each airline on five service factors:

  • Cabin crew

  • Aircraft comfort

  • Aircraft cleanliness

  • Food offering

  • Entertainment onboard

Each factor is rated from "very good" to "very bad". The ratings are turned into numeric values and averaged into a final Customer Opinion score. The higher the score, the better the airline performed across these factors. You can find the full methodology here.

How reliable is Air India? On-time performance, past and present

Pinning down what makes an airline "reliable" isn't simple. Our take rests on the factor that shapes your journey most: punctuality. So we look at it from two angles:

  • The long view: on-time performance ratings and annual punctuality figures

  • The short view: the latest picture on cancellations and lengthy delays

Together they give you a concrete sense of what to expect from Air India.

Annual On-Time Performance

  • 6.4/10 (Oct 2024 - Sep 2025) – 64% of flights arrived on time*

*What "on time" means: a flight counts as on time when it arrives within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival. The score is the share of on-time arrivals across a 12-month period.

Recent operational performance (last 7 days)

The AirHelp Score reflects long-term reliability; the figures below show how Air India has performed on the ground over the past 7 days. These aren't passenger reviews, they're real-world figures based on flight-tracking data, refreshed weekly.

Overall network performance

  • Total flights operated: 8306

  • Flights arrived on-time: 3090 (37.20%)

  • Flight cancellations: 4689

Flight disruptions and your right to compensation

This data matters for two reasons: it tells you something about Air India's punctuality, and it helps you work out where you stand on compensation. A delay of more than 3 hours can entitle you to a payout under air passenger rights law, principally UK261 for flights departing from the UK, and EC 261 for flights departing from the EU. As a non-UK and non-EU carrier, Air India is covered on departures from the UK and EU, but not on flights arriving from India.

Here's Air India's breakdown of delays of 3+ hours over the last seven days, split between domestic and international flights:

3+ hours delays

  • International routes: 3 flights affected (0.16% of operations)

  • Domestic routes: 5 flights affected (0.08% of operations)

How Air India handles flight disruptions

When a flight is delayed or cancelled, the way the airline responds can shape your whole trip. Here's what passengers can generally expect from Air India in these situations, based on passenger protection law and AirHelp's own data.

Communication practices

Under UK261, EC 261, and other passenger protection rules, airlines are required to keep passengers informed about the status of their flight, the reason behind a delay or other disruption (such as a cancellation or overbooking), and the rights that come with it.

Rebooking & assistance

If your flight is cancelled or heavily delayed (usually 5 hours or more), you can choose between the next available flight, rescheduling for a later date that suits you, or a full refund. And once you've been waiting 2 hours or more, the airline also has to look after you, with food and drinks, grant you access to communication, and, where an overnight stay is needed, transport and accommodation.

Air India claims processing rating

When a flight doesn't go to plan, you may be entitled to compensation under UK261, EC 261, or similar rules. Drawing on our data, we've assessed how Air India processes these compensation claims.

Air India claims processing score

  • 4.4/10

This score reflects factors such as how likely the airline is to pay out valid claims, the volume of claims it processes, and both its past and current claims-processing behaviour.

Your rights: when Air India owes you compensation

When you fly with Air India, strong passenger protection laws are on your side.

UK261 protects you on Air India flights departing from a UK airport, and EC 261 on flights departing from an airport in the EU. Under these rules, you can claim compensation when:

  • Your flight arrives at your final destination 3 or more hours late

  • Your flight is cancelled with less than 14 days' notice

  • You're denied boarding because the flight is overbooked

The amount you're owed is set by law according to flight distance:

Flight distance

Compensation

Up to 1,500 km
£220
1,500 - 3,500 km
£350
Over 3,500 km
£520

Key exception: airlines don't have to pay out when the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond their control, think severe weather, political unrest, or air traffic control restrictions. Technical faults and staffing shortages, though, don't count as valid excuses.

How to claim compensation from Air India

There are two ways to make a claim under UK and EU law: directly with the airline, or through a specialist third party like AirHelp.

Claim directly with Air India

Every airline runs its own claims process. You'll need to gather your flight documents, work out which rules apply to your case, submit everything, and then follow up for updates.

If they ignore you or drag things out, your next step is to take it to the relevant national aviation authority. If that still doesn't resolve things, legal action may be the next step, with court as a last resort.

Let AirHelp take care of the claiming process

We do the heavy lifting, so you can focus on what matters.

  • Check whether you're eligible with our quick tool

  • Upload your documents, and we'll tell you exactly what's needed

  • Sit back while we handle everything, court action included if it comes to that
