Turkish regulations on air passenger rights

TURKISH AIR PASSENGER RIGHTS:

  • Receive up to £520 compensation in Turkish Lira.

  • Laws cover delays, cancellations, and overbooking.

  • All Turkish flights are protected.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled, it’s more than just annoying — it can also cost you a lot of time and money. If you have to stay overnight, the airline loses your bags, or you miss an important event, the impact can be even greater.

The good news is that no matter your nationality or age, if you’re flying into, out of, or within Turkey, you may be entitled to compensation under the Turkish Regulation on Air Passenger Rights also known as SHY PASSENGER. AirHelp makes claiming it easy.

AT A GLANCE

Know your passenger rights in Turkey

All flights departing from Turkey are protected by Turkish air passenger rights, as are all international flights that land in Turkey on a Turkish airline.

Air passenger rights in Turkey are modeled on European Union regulation EC 261. As a result, they call for similar compensation and strong protection for passengers.

You can submit a claim for between £90 and £520 (paid in Turkish Lira) if your flight was delayed by at least 3 hours on arrival, you were denied boarding, or your flight was cancelled less than 2 weeks before departure.

If any flight is delayed, the airline must offer a means of communication. If an overnight stay is needed, it also must provide accommodation and a transfer.

If your flight is cancelled or you’re denied boarding, you’re entitled to a refund or alternative route to your destination.

You have 1 year to make a claim.

Compensation for domestic flights is capped at £90, but paid in Turkish Lira.

Even though Turkish law protects UK passengers, claiming compensation on your own can be time-consuming and difficult. AirHelp makes it easy by checking how the Turkish Regulation on Air Passenger Rights (SHY PASSENGER) applies to your case and submitting your claim using the strongest arguments available.

What’s not covered: force majeure

Turkish air passenger rights distinguish between flight disruptions caused by something within the airline’s control and those due to exceptional circumstances that aren’t the airline’s fault.

Disruptions that would be considered to be a force majeure can include, for example:

  • Extreme inclement weather

  • Volcanic eruptions and ash clouds (natural disasters)

  • Wars or security threats

An airline doesn’t have to pay compensation for flight delays caused by things it can’t control, although you’re still entitled to care and onward transportation.

How to claim compensation under Turkish air passenger rights

You can submit a claim directly to the airline, but it can be slow and stressful — and valid claims are sometimes rejected on technicalities.

A better option is to let AirHelp handle it. Just share your flight details and we’ll:

  • Check how SHY PASSENGER applies

  • Build the strongest case possible

  • Handle negotiations with the airline

On your own

  • Lots of confusing legal jargon. Air passenger rights regulations are complex.

  • Lengthy and tricky process supplying paperwork and making calls.

  • It's expensive to take legal action and you have to pay your lawyer's fee, win or lose.

  • Smaller chance of success. Airlines may ignore you, or wrongly reject your claim.

Documents needed to make a claim

Not sure what documents you need to support your claim? Don’t worry; based on your airline, we’ll let you know exactly what’s required and make the process as fast and easy as it can be. That said, most airlines typically ask for at least the following:

  • some form of ID

  • your booking confirmation and boarding passes (mobile or paper)

You should also keep receipts, invoices, or bank statements if you wish to claim additional costs — like accommodation or food & drinks — back from the airline.

If you don’t have documents related to your flight because you’ve lost or deleted them, let us know. We’ll help you find the required information.

Checklist for making a claim
